Caravanning with Kids

Small Spaces, Big Energy - What Could Go Wrong?

There's a certain magic in taking kids caravanning. It's freedom with wheels, bedtime stories under a tin roof, and toast cooked slightly too long over a portable stove. But let's not sugar-coat it - when done wrong, it's also bickering over who gets the top bunk and trying to make toast whilst someone's crying over dropped Lego.

Luckily, with a bit of planning (and a good stash of snacks), caravanning with kids can be the kind of family adventure they remember for years - for the right reasons.

Plan Like You've Never Planned Before

Spontaneity? Lovely in theory. But kids thrive on routine, even in the wild. A flexible-but-thought-out plan is your secret weapon here.

What to Absolutely Pack (and Not Just Assume Is "In There Somewhere")

Space is tight, but a few key bits will make a world of difference. Leave the waffle maker. Bring these:

  • Favourite bedtime things - Soft toys, storybooks, the same blanket they always sleep with. Non-negotiable.
  • Snacks. Then more snacks - Hungry kids are feral. Be armed.
  • Clothes for every kind of weather - Yes, even if the forecast says "sunny."
  • Waterproofs and wellies - Mud happens. Sometimes on purpose.
  • A first aid kit with more plasters than you think you may need - Apparently knees are made to be scraped.

Keep Everyone (Roughly) Happy

You won't keep everyone perfectly content all the time. That's fine. But a few tricks go a long way.

  • Let them help - Give them jobs. Kids love jobs. Let them set up chairs, choose snacks, be "in charge" of the torch.
  • Break up the days - One adventure, one chill. Too much in one go and they'll crash by tea.
  • Keep routines loose but familiar - Same dinner time, same bedtime, just with more fresh air and midges.

A Tiny Note on Insurance

Kids plus outdoor life equals the occasional oops. Broken windows, bashed bikes, or an errant football hitting someone's solar panel. Double check your caravan insurance includes accidental damage - especially if you're bringing the full circus along.

It's Not About Perfection - It's About Puddles and Pancakes

Caravanning with kids is messy, noisy, slightly chaotic - and honestly, pretty brilliant. You'll forget the tantrums, but you'll remember the toast cooked on sticks and muddy footprints up the steps. Embrace the madness. Bring marshmallows. Laugh more than you plan. The rest will sort itself out. (Eventually.)
